Arc 2: Part 53
Little Thirteen was still somewhat fearful due to the rumors he had previously spread on his own initiative.
However, he felt as though he played the role of a matchmaker and that the adults should only be grateful rather than angry toward him. After comforting himself for a while, he estimated that the time was about right and sluggishly made his way back.
Upon reaching the entrance of the tent, he saw Xiao Lingchen ordering someone to move a small stove into his tent.
Since it was already late, neither he nor Tong Su had eaten anything. Lighting a fire in the kitchen would inevitably attract too much attention. Therefore, Tong Su suggested they should just get some broth and vegetables and cook a pot of noodles — light and warm, perfect for their intimate dinner.
Xiao Lingchen nodded in agreement. He had recently grown more attached to Tong Su and didn't want her to overwork. He figured he could at least boil some water to help. With this thought, he happily agreed.
Tong Su had someone bring over meatballs, broth, chopped green onions, and plain noodle flour. Rolling up her sleeves to get started, she enthusiastically asked, "Brother, what kind of noodles do you want?"
Xiao Lingchen frowned slightly, suddenly finding the term "brother" particularly uncomfortable. "Are you still calling me 'Brother'? Change your form of address."
Tong Su turned around to look at him and burst into laughter, leaning into his ear, "What should I change it to? Lord Xiao? Taifu Xiao? Xiao Lingchen?"
She was much shorter than him. At this moment, she had to stand on tiptoe while he also bent down slightly. Unintentionally, the tip of her nose grazed his cheek.
Feeling like an electrifying sensation coursing through his body, his ears reddened. He vaguely heard her say, "How about I call you 'Gege'?"
She was too close. Her breath smelled sweet as an orchid. He felt as though his ears were burning. Looking down, he replied softly, "Okay."
Just as Little Thirteen sneakily reached the entrance of the tent, he saw Xiao Lingchen standing there, taking in the fresh air with his hands behind his back.
Gone was the gloomy expression that clouded his face earlier.
Now, his face radiated with unspeakable satisfaction and pride. His previous paleness had been replaced by a rosy flush on his cheeks. His ears even appeared unusually red, making him look gentlemanly and victorious, like a tree blooming in the springtime.
"Sir, do you need me to guard the door and keep watch for you tonight?"
"Do you dare to come back?" Upon seeing Little Thirteen, Xiao Lingchen didn’t explode in anger but simply uttered coolly, "I haven’t yet found the time to punish you for your nonsensical chatter."
Little Thirteen blinked, offering only a smile in response.
Xiao Lingchen lifted his chin, saying, "Never mind, considering your many years of dedicated service, I’ll not punish you. But this should not be repeated."
"Yes, sir."
"...You've always been loyal, and I'm not a harsh master. With the year-end approaching, in recognition of your merits, I’ll reward you with that Dragon Spring Sword you’ve long coveted. Once we return to the mansion, you may claim it from my storage room."
Overjoyed, Little Thirteen immediately bowed in gratitude, "Thank you, sir, for your reward!"
Tong Su vaguely heard some sounds outside and called out, "Who's there? Is it that nonsense-spouting liar Little Thirteen? Gege, if you see him, hold him for me. I want to give him a piece of my mind."
Little Thirteen immediately closed his mouth, yet he blinked at Xiao Lingchen with a puzzled expression: Why was Second Miss still calling him 'Gege'?
Snapping back to reality, Xiao Lingchen responded, "Okay, I'll call him over tomorrow and you can punish him however you wish."
A joyous affirmation emerged from the tent, leaving Little Thirteen speechless: Master, isn't this a bit too much?
On turning around however, Xiao Lingchen nonchalantly said, "You don't understand this form of address, and it's not your fault. After all, you and I are different. You are a lone man with no family or wife. You naturally wouldn't understand the terms of endearment used between close ones."
Little Thirteen: ????
Xiao Lingchen nodded, his expression aloof with a hint of subtle pride.
"I have matters to discuss with Bai Zhu tonight, so you don't need to keep guard. Go rest early. After all, being alone, you must feel lonely sometimes. I understand, don't be too upset."
Little Thirteen: !!!!!
Master, that's just too much!
LMAO poor little thirteen, that sword will only look so good for a short while in the face of the long years of single dog abuse!
