Arc 2: Part 34
The man, draped in dark, wide sleeves, stirred up strong gusts of wind. His tall figure seemingly made the spacious tent appears cramped.
His stride was not fast, but each step seemed to tread heavily upon people's hearts. He exuded a fierce, chilling aura, as if he was stepping through mighty waves and biting wind. Before anyone could react, he was already standing in the middle of the crowd.
Looking up, his gaze met Tong Su's.
In that instant of eye contact, Tong Su froze, while the man's deep eyes softened slightly: “I am here.”
However, he turned his head, and his expression visibly became colder!
This coldness settled on the blade pressed against her neck, on the guards surrounding her, and on the commanding face of Emperor Xuanyi.
His cold gaze seemed to drop the temperature with each inch it moved.
Inside the tent, the charcoal brazier seemed to lose its effect as the wind howled in, pouring cold into everyone’s bones. Everyone turned pale, shrank, uncontrollably shivering and stepping backward.
He raised his head and coldly declared: “Your Majesty, this subject objects”.
Despite referring to himself as a subject, there was no trace of the respect and obedience a subject should have!
His face held no sign of anger, but no one would doubt the fury within his heart!
Emperor Xuanyi struggled to control his trembling legs.
He looked at Xiao Lingchen, who was expressionless, with near terror, yet the blatant disrespect from Xiao Lingchen ignited an insurmountable rage in him.
“What do you object to?”
Xiao Lingchen looked up with icy eyes. He spoke slowly and punctuated his words, “Have you considered my opinion before deciding to take my sister?”
“Do I need to ask for your opinion? Xiao Lingchen, are you disobeying the imperial decree?”
Emperor Xuanyi's face flushed with anger. He felt everyone’s gazes upon him; they were all watching him, their Emperor, being cornered by a subject.
Angry and ashamed, he glared at Xiao Lingchen, yelling, “Guards, arrest Xiao Qingwan and throw her into the prison!”
Xiao Lingchen swept his glance over the guards preparing to pull out their swords. They hesitated, dared not move.
He took a step forward, forcing the guards to hastily step aside, allowing him to penetrate the circle and reach Tong Su's side.
His tall figure blocked her, shielding her from all swords, he kept her safely behind him.
He said, “Your Majesty, all I want is the truth. Isn't it somewhat suspicious that you're in such a hurry to convict her, almost as if you'd want to destroy evidence?"
This was the first time Xiao Lingchen had so brazenly disrespected him!
Emperor Xuanyi was so angered that he began to feel dizzy. “Xiao Lingchen, are you planning a rebellion? How dare you talk to me like this!”
Xiao Lingchen gave a quiet chuckle. “Your Majesty, you're overthinking it. I have no such thoughts for now.”
His tone was calm, but there was something about his deadly earnestness that made the faces around them pale.
No such thoughts for now?
What did he mean, did he plan to rebel and usurp the throne in the future?
Was he openly threatening Emperor Xuanyi?
He must be mad!
“Has he gone mad?”
Tong Su was also on the verge of yelling out, but she quickly restrained herself. She lightly touched Xiao Lingchen's hand and indicated, “Brother, let me speak.”
At this point, anyone who tried to stop Xiao Lingchen would probably be scared witless by his icy stare.
But when Xiao Lingchen turned his head to look at her, while his face remained stern, the violent icy aura suddenly halted.
He didn't say anything but slightly moved to the side, leaving space for her to show half of her body. However, he still firmly shielded her behind him, securely covering her from the pointed swords. His large hand flipped over, taking her gently tapped hand and held it tightly.
His wide sleeve fell, blocking the sight of everyone else.
