Arc 2: Part 16
"Bai Zhu nourishes and balances the energy, warms the core, and removes dampness. Older brother, you've struggled with appetite loss for a while. I chose Bai Zhu because it helps strengthen the spleen, and boosts your vital energy."
The young girl smiled gracefully, her voice clear and melodious, like a tranquil stream flowing into one's heart. It was refreshing and soothing, dissipating the chaos in the listeners' minds and leaving behind warmth and serenity.
She spoke unhurriedly and ensured others paid close attention, unable to interrupt her.
Now, Tong Su finally had the opportunity to get a good look at her brother's features.
Upon seeing him, she was startled.
His eyes bore an uncanny resemblance to those of Xi Chen Zhao.
However, he was also entirely different.
What was similar was the depth and darkness in their eyes; one couldn't discern their emotions. They conveyed an oppressive and regal presence that caused involuntary trembling during eye contact, prompting one to look away.
What set them apart was Xi Chen Zhao's naturally aristocratic demeanor, exuding grace and elegance. While appearing refined and noble, he emanated a coldness that pushed people away.
In contrast, Xiao Lingchen had the depth and restraint of a leader: dignified, composed, and an expert at hiding his intentions. His moves were subtle yet decisive, sharp and deadly.
If Xi Chen Zhao could be described as an exquisite, jewel-encrusted sword, brilliant but untouchable,
Then Xiao Lingchen is a blade hidden within an unassuming mahogany sheath, its edge dark yet unquestionably seasoned with bloodshed!
Six years older than Tong Su's current form, Xiao Lingchen, now twenty-six, was about the same height as Xi Chen Zhao but slightly thinner. He has handsome features with a pale, almost sickly complexion.
But any political adversaries on the court who dared to underestimate him as a frail, pampered young master would probably end up imprisoned or on the verge of death before realizing it was Xiao Lingchen who had masterminded their downfall!
Xiao Lingchen arched his eyebrow in surprise. He hadn't expected her to be so meticulous in preparing his meal.
"Why are you, the noble daughter of the Grand Preceptor's mansion, so knowledgeable and skilled in medicinal herbs and cooking? Are you content with performing a cook's duties?"
Stunned for a moment, Tong Su vigorously shook her head, her eyes shimmering, "Qingwan never minds that. Being able to do something for Brother is the thing that makes me happiest!"
She placed her palms together in front of her chest, staring earnestly at Xiao Lingchen, declaring, "Qingwan knows that Brother holds a prominent position and has many responsibilities. But no matter what, health is of utmost importance. The matters can wait if you sleep an hour more, but it's challenging to recover once the body is harmed."
Her innocent words invoked laughter from Xiao Lingchen.
She didn't understand that some political matters couldn't be delayed. Even if his response was an hour late, it didn't mean the execution would be delayed by the same amount of time.
Perhaps sensing his disagreement, the young girl appeared troubled and hung her head, only to look up suddenly as if struck by an idea, her voice full of confidence.
"Qingwan doesn't understand, and won't question. But I can help Brother by preparing more medicinal meals to nourish your body! Brother, the Bái Zhú spare rib soup is ready; I'll have someone bring it to you. Don't be greedy, although it's delicious, eating too much may upset your stomach. Drinking a small half-bowl is enough!"
A flicker of amusement crossed Xiao Lingchen's brow, "A moment ago, you encouraged me to drink several bowls; now, you're only allowing half a bowl?"
The young girl looked bewildered, her expression a mix of surprise and dissatisfaction.
But this displeasure was not aimed at him; it seemed to be directed at someone else, being perfunctory and resulting in her annoyance.
She pursed her lips, forcing out her words, "... Qingwan misspoke earlier. From now on, I'll prepare the right amount for Brother. It's still not good for you to be indulgent in your diet…"
Xiao Lingchen, suddenly taken by a playful mood, decided to tease her.
His expression unchanging, he casually suggested, "No need for later, and no need to bring it to my courtyard. The main kitchen has tables and chairs for dining. How about I go to the kitchen with you now, and you prepare it for me personally?"
